African Perspectives On The Concept Of Just Energy Transition Partnerships

Third workshop of Ukȧmȧ, the Africa-Europe platform for sustainable development thinker

At COP26, a Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) was announced between South Africa and a consortium of donor countries, mobilising an initial US$8.5 billion for South Africa’s just energy transition.

Since then and in the run-up to COP27, the concept of JETPs as country platforms for the support of energy transitions in developing economies has gained interest from across the development and climate finance communities, developed and developing countries and Development Finance Institutions (DFIs).

South Africa is a middle-income country and by far the largest emitter in Africa. If the concept is to be applied in other countries, the energy challenges which vary from the need to transition to the need to scale up a clean and accessible energy infrastructure are to be well understood in a context where the priority of responding to climate impacts remains underfunded. The Ukama platform has critically reflected upon this concept of JETPs and its potential relevance in different African contexts via three case studies based on the work of Meridian Economics (South Africa), Enda Energie (Senegal) and Integrated Africa Power (Nigeria).

The policy workshop will provide key messages from these three country studies and reflections on the narrative of JETPs in African contexts more broadly. The workshop will be led by Ukama Co-Chairs Chukwumerije Okereke (Professor at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo; Director Centre for Climate Change and Development (CCCD)), and Sébastien Treyer (Director, IDDRI).
